It seems like the season started two weeks ago, and now we are already in the playoffs for Texas High School Girls’ Basketball! There are the traditional powers like Gruver, who is undefeated this season and Nazareth, and upstart teams like Monterey; who finished the season 4-26 last year and are 27-8 a year later heading into the dance!
So, here are five things to look for this playoff run for all of our 806 teams!

CAN BROWNFIELD REPEAT IN THE 3A DUNGEON
Man! Brownfield had one of the most historic runs in 806 basketball last year when the Lady Cubs won it all for the first time since 1989 and this year they are favored to win it again with every player on their roster including Gabi Fields, who committed to Northern Colorado to play Division One Basketball on the next level! Teams like Shallowater, Canadian, Idalou, Peaster, Ponder and Fairfield are all ready to take the crown but the Lady Cubs are battle-tested and ready! Should be fun!
WHO COMES OUT OF 5A OR GOES THE FURTHEST IN THIS YEAR’S PLAYOFF RUN?
This year’s 5A edition of basketball teams is loaded on the girls side and is led by Amarillo; who is ranked fifth in the state and has played a brutal schedule! Lubbock-Cooper is seventh in the state and has a head-to-head win over Amarillo by two points earlier this season. Monterey is ranked 20th and are led by Aaliyah Chavez; who is the number one ranked prospect in the country for 2025 and holds 15 Division One offers after her latest offer from Florida State on Friday. Let’s not forget about Kelly Mora who is ranked in the top 5 in three different categories in the state as well!
Randall, Wylie, and Plainview will also be formidable opponents in the playoffs!
HOW FAR AHEAD OF THE PACK IS GRUVER IN 2A?
2A!! I love the competition here, but I have to wonder just how far ahead of the pack Gruver is coming into the playoff run. Led by 2022 Texas Tech commit, Bailey Maupin, the Lady Hounds have hounded their opponents and beat teams like Canyon, Canadian and Brownfield so far this year. They are damn good and I don’t expect them to lose on their way to another title this year. New Home, Panhandle, Sudan and more will still make the 2A run very interesting!
ALL THESE REMATCHES COMING… WHICH ONE WILL BE THE BEST?
I understand it’s one game at a time.. but I can look ahead, can’t I? All these rematches are on the cusp of happening early in the playoffs including Brownfield vs Idalou in the Area Round this weekend! Last year’s game was an instant classic with the Lady Cubs pulling out the victory after a foul at the end of the game by the Lady Cats and Gabi Fields hitting three clutch free throws to secure the victory on the way to Brownfield’s State title! What about Shallowater vs Canadian in the third round? Monterey vs Plainview Tuesday, Lubbock-Cooper vs Amarillo in the third round?!?!?! It’s about to get crazy this week!
WILL LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN REPEAT IN TAPPS 4A?
It’s a one word answer: Yes! With Abbie Crow and Brooke Hooten as the leaders for this year’s team, don’t expect a drop-off from the Lady Eagles! I love to watch them play as they work hard every possession, can hit the long ball and love each other out there! Can’t wait to see them repeat!
