THE 806 REGIONAL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: THIS COULD BE THE BIGGEST WEEKEND IN 806 HISTORY.

This has been an interesting season to say the least in 806 girl‘s basketball. We have had some teams like Vega come out of nowhere to be elite, to teams like Panhandle; who scheduled hard and seemed to be forgot about until they started knocking everyone else in front of them off. Idalou and Shallowater survived the 2-3A gauntlet while teams like Canyon, Nazareth and Amarillo rolled all year like we thought. So, here we are with one of the biggest weekends in 806 basketball history for the girls as we have at least one representative in every classification and private school this season! Here is our preview of every Regional Tournament! As always, god luck, 806!

6A REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

WILKERSON-GREINES CENTER

FORT WORTH, TX

806 REPRESENTATIVE: FRENSHIP TIGERS

Frenship played a very tough schedule this season in pre-district play and it has paid off as the Tigers went undefeated in District play and have rolled into the 6A sweet 16 where they will take on Cedar Hill at 8pm on Friday. Maci Maddox, Ashlyn Caddel and the rest of the squad are deep and dangerous. They are battle-tested and can beat Cedar Hill. If the Tigers don’t turn the ball over and hit threes early, it could be a great day in Tigerland!

5A REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

THE COLISEUM, SNYDER TEXAS

806 REPRESENTATIVE: AMARILLO SANDIES

Amarillo is back in the Regional Tournament again and looking to 3-peat, or D-peat as State Champions in 5A! After two blowout wins, the Sandies were pushed just a bit against Palo Duro and won the game 39-33. Amarillo will take on Lake Dallas on Friday and they automatically will have the best two players on the floor with Senior Zayla Tinner and Freshman Zeryhia-Lee Tuimoloau Aokuso. Yes: the freshman isn’t for any games and is up next in the pantheon of Amarillo greats. When Amarillo is on, no one in the state can beat them. Coach Williams will have them ready and I expect them to be in San Antonio next week.

4A REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

RIP GRIFFIN CENTER, LUBBOCK TX (LCU)

806 REPRESENTATIVES: CANYON, HEREFORD

Right off the bat Canyon will see the team that knocked them out of the Regional Tourney last year in Argyle. The Lady Eagles have been #1 all year and they should pull this one out as well. Hereford will take on and defeat Bridgeport and set up a in-district matchup Saturday for a trip to the Alamodome!

3A REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

HUTCHERSON CENTER, PLAINVIEW TX

CAMPUS OF WAYLAND BAPTIST

806 REPRESENTATIVES: IDALOU, SHALLOWATER

I really thought these two teams would be in the Regional Tourney since the season started. Shallowater was ranked number one in the TABC poll for at least half of the season and have played the toughest schedule in the state! Tynli Harris has been exceptional off the ball and their defense can stop you from doing anything when they are locked in. Idalou has been in the top 5 all season as well and look to have righted the ship with their impressive playoff wins including a thumping of Brownfield Tuesday by 31 points! Both squads will have tough games Friday but both should win and we could see PT.3 of this matchup with the winner heading to the State Tournament!

2A REGIONAL TOURNAMENT: TEXAN DOME

LEVELLAND, TEXAS SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE

806 REPRESENTATIVES: PANHANDLE, GRUVER

This Regional Tournament should be fun! I think Panhandle, led by Mason Jones and Gruver, led by Bailey Maupin should win their games over Haskell and Stamford, respectively. The fun will be at 2:30pm Saturday when both of these teams take on one-another for a shot at San Antonio!

1A REGIONAL TOURNAMENT:

TEXAN DOME, LEVELLAND TX

SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE

806 REPRESENTATIVES: NEW HOME, CLAUDE, ROPESVILLE, NAZARETH

The game of the year is Friday at 2:30 when Ropes plays Nazareth! Both teams are in the top 5 in 1A and they had a thriller game last season! Maggie Anderson and the Lady Eagles will look to avenge that loss from last season but it won’t be easy.. Nazareth is really good! New Home will face Claude and that should be a good game as well, unless Claude starts hot early and then it could be trouble for the Lady Leopards.

I will be updating this blog over the weekend so stay tuned here!
