SUNDAY MORNING WEEK 2 HUDDLE: FRENSHIP, NEW DEAL AMONG TEAMS STREAKING..

Week two was another great and interesting showcase of 806 football as teams like Frenship, Midland Legacy, Ropes, Roosevelt and others were very sharp in their wins while other teams like Brownfield and Panhandle are still trying to find their groove in 2021. Here is my huddle report for week two.

FRENSHIP IS GETTING HOT

The Tigers out there in Wolfforth, TX are starting to get hot at the right time as evidenced in their 62-0 win over Clovis Friday at home. Chad Pharies has a lot of weapons around him and he is an excellent quarterback as well. Add that great line anchored by DI prospect, Isaiah Kema and their set. Defensively, the Tigers posted their first shutout since week one of 2019 when they defeated Amarillo, 31-0. Their game next week against #5 Lubbock-Cooper will be a great one to see where BOTH teams are at currently, and what both need to do before they embark on playoff runs this fall.

TULIA IS SHOWING PROMISE EARLY

We can’t start to overreact but we can notice how good Coach Coursey’s team in Hornet Country is looking right now. Travon McCaslin threw for 419 yards for the Hornets in their win over Brownfield Friday and he is definitely looking like a next-level prospect! I like to always be honest and not jump the gun on teams so we will keep our eye on the Hornets as they should win Friday against Sanford-Fritch and then two tough games as they will travel to Muleshoe to take on the Mules and then their district opener at home against Highland Park the next week; a game that I’ll be to check out live.

NEW DEAL LOOKING STRONGER EVERY WEEK IN 2A DI

New Deal was one of the few teams that we had picked to have a great season and long run in the playoffs in 2A. This looks to be a solid pick as the Lions are roaring after their two opening wins to start the season with the latter coming against #3 Wellington, 28-6 Friday. Leric Eaton ran for 149 yards and two touchdowns in that win over the Skyrockets and Harley Patterson had two touchdowns and no turnovers. New Deal looks to be the real deal early. The thing about the Lions is… They play BETTER later!

CORONADO IS STRUGGLING OFFENSIVELY

One point of note: it’s hard to replace a Sawyer Robertson on offense at the quarterback position and players like Eli Martinez at the receiver position and that’s exactly what first-year head coach, DJ Mann is being tasked to do. The Mustangs have lost their first two games this season and they only lost once last year the entire campaign. The Mustangs will be fine, but there are things to figure out before they start a very tough District 2-5A DI. There are elements to the mix that have to get better quickly; I think Coronado will right the ship soon.

RANDALL LOOKING SOLID EARLY:

Coach Selmon’s Raiders have started off the season with two great victories over their heated rivals from Canyon and a tough Caprock team on Thursday, 27-13. I’m hearing the Burd’s the word as he has been playing at an elite level and protecting the ball in the process. I was impressed with his three touchdowns Thursday in Randall’s win over the Longhorns. There is a big test coming Friday for the Raiders against Amarillo‘s Sandies at home and I can’t wait to see how that game plays out!

FRIONA’S COOKING AGAIN

Coach Arias has the Chiefs playing exceptionally well early as their 38-0 win over 4A Borger opened some eyes and improved their record to 2-0 on the season! Jacob Bautista is a dog..RUFF!! He had another multiple-touchdown game Friday and looks to be the key cog for the offense to get going weekly. Their game against Muleshoe will be a tough, offensive contest Friday in Muleshoe!

J’MAURY DAVIS OF CLARENDON IS FINALLY GETTING HIS DUE NATIONALLY

Clarendon’s J’Maury Davis (#3 pictured above) is a prospect that I have been telling you guys about for a while. Well, it seems like Davis, a 2023 Athere is finally getting the National attention he is due. Just this last week he received his second and third Division One offers from Kentucky and from Purdue! Expect a ton of other offers to roll in for J’Maury as all he does is work hard! A very respectful young man and humble as well. He also can play some round ball too!

TASCOSA LOSING TO WIN? WHAT??

Yeah, I said that: Tascosa is losing to win. What I meant by that is, they lost to a team that is one of the best in West Texas and is a 6A program In Midland Legacy! Quality losses to great teams make you better, rather than beating up on an inferior team which helps your team in no way and gets your community thinking falsely about your outlook. This Friday, the Rebels have another tough game against Odessa Permian in Odessa and then ANOTHER tough game against San Angelo Central at West Texas A&M before District 2-5A DI play! Also, Major Everhart is the best Athlete in West Texas, by a mile! He narrowed his list down to seven schools and all of those schools are hoping and praying he chooses them; he is a program-changer!
