This is the game we as fans have talked about for a while: we saw it coming since the schedule released in September and now it’s here as both teams will square off at 6:00pm at Lubbock-Cooper’s red box that rocks. #8 Lubbock-Cooper against Monterey; who was ranked 21st last week before a 37-point win last Tuesday against Abilene Cooper and a 31-point win over Coronado but Maxpreps entered the score wrong and credited Monterey with a loss Friday and led to the Lady Plainsmen being dropped out of the top 25 in 5A.
This game has star power on both sides. Monterey has one of the top players in the country for 2025 in Aaliyah Chavez, who scored 50 points in their win over Coronado and broke a 29-year school record perviously held by Kim Sumrall; who had 48 points in a game for Monterey back in 1993! Also Kelly Mora has looked outstanding a year removed from her injury that kept her out last year as she posted a 33-point, 27-rebound and 14-block triple-double performance against Abilene Cooper last Tuesday.
Lubbock-Cooper has a ton of great players on their roster and a power star in Adlee Blacklock; who committed to Oregon State earlier this year and she is rounding into form after an injury that kept her out last year as well. Catalina Cortez, Majik Esquivel, and Bella Sipowicz also are dangerous and play their roles well for Coach Lovorn‘s great team this season.
Does this game matter a bunch? To us, yes. But in the grand scheme of things, it may be only one of potentiality three games they play this season. The winner will have sole possession of first place and the loser will be in second. The game will come down to how Monterey defends Lubbock-Cooper’s dangerous outside game and how the Lady Pirates deal with Aaliyah and Kelly, along with Monterey’s role players getting hot and contributing on both sides of the ball.
