My breakdown:

Guys, this is the biggest game in the STATE!

Both teams have already played twice with the Lady Pirates winning the first game and Monterey winning the second matchup; which happened to be the Caprock Big School Girls’ Championship with the Lady Plainsmen winning by nine points. What adjustments have been made? How big is this game, seeding-wise? What will be the main factor or factors for each team to come out with a victory? Here is my breakdown below:

This matchup is huge, especially for the playoff picture in District 4-5A! Lubbock-Cooper’s win earlier this year was big for their district title chances and if they can pull this game out they’ll go into the playoffs as the one seed, while Monterey will be the two seed. Now, if you know the brackets, the number two seed is actually BETTER than the one seed, but we will get to that later.

For Monterey, it will be Aaliyah Chavez, of course. If she goes for 45-50, there won’t be much of a game becaose I feel like Jaelyn Morrison, Ambrosia Cole and Texas Tech 2023 Commit, Kelly Mora will at least make up 40 points. So if Monterey goes over 75, they win.

For Lubbock-Cooper, it will be Peyton North.

The Senior had 25 points in their last district game and every point was needed in a 74-71 win. Defensively, does Coach Lovorn roll the dice and double-team Aaliyah and hope the supporting cast doesn’t get hot? Or do you let Chavez get hers but try your best to shut everyone else down?

It’s going to go either two ways… Monterey in a blowout, or both teams play a classic again! Remember, even with both teams at full-strength, Lubbock-Cooper was only down three points heading into the fourth quarter on New Year’s Eve! This game will be great! Get there early and watch the JV game and avoid the line! 806 basketball is King again..Especially on the girls side! Henry Camargo will have this game covered for us! Can’t wait!
