JONES, THOMAS LEAD STANDOUTS AT TECH’S TEAM CAMP

Last weekend was a sensational event for all the West Texas basketball players at Texas Tech’s team camp, led by Head Coach Mark Adams. There were hundreds of games, great intensity and Canyon and Randall both playing in the championship game in the Gold Varsity bracket. I know I watched at least 30 games and here are the top ten players that stood out to me at the camp.

1 KEMPER JONES

CANYON HIGH SCHOOL

Kemper had an exceptional camp! I got to see him play in three games and he was a pivotal piece of the Eagles team that made noise the entire weekend. Jones’ best performance was in the Quarterfinals against Shallowater where he scored Canyon’s first 14 points and ended up with 32 in their win over the Mustangs. 2 KJ THOMAS

RANDALL HIGH SCHOOL

KJ has the complete package and displayed it all this weekend for the Raiders. He has a quick and accurate release and can also get to the rim and finish anytime he wants to. KJ sees the floor well and can really play great in the screen-and-roll action with his teammates. Expect a lot of offers to come for Thomas soon as he is one of the best prospects in West Texas for 2024’s class.

3 AMAREE GARMON

LUBBOCK-COOPER HIGH SCHOOL

Amaree really raised his stock this weekend at Tech. He can do a lot more than dunk; but he does that well too! I was impressed with his midrange game and his individual defense. The Pirates only had seven players and went undefeated in pool play this weekend including a big win over their rivals from Frenship and Amaree played a big part in that victory!

4 COOPER LUSK

SHALLOWATER HIGH SCHOOL

We all got to hang with Mr. Coop this weekend and we had a great time! He is a perfectionist on getting to the spots he needs to get to in order to score the basketball but also plays some great defense for Shallowater. On Saturday night against Randall, Lusk had four blocks on the night while taking on players that had him by at least three inches the entire game! A quiet assassin: Cooper will fill up the stat sheet fast while not saying too much!

5 MICHAEL MCCLEOD

SAN ANTONIO FINEST

San Antonio came down to the 806 and put on for the 210 while playing some great basketball games! Michael stood out to me because of his quickness, agility and consistent jumper! McCleod is also very fast to the rim and finishes strong in the paint!

6 SURREAL GARRETT

CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL

Surreal can play any sport with DI ability as he is just a gifted talent that works hard at his craft. Already holding a few DI offers for football, we tend to forget he can really play some good basketball! His jumper was smooth this weekend and Garrett also took on many big time assignments on defense!

7 JAKARI DAVIS

SHALLOWATER HIGH SCHOOL

Jakari is a five-tool player; anything you need done on the court, he’ll do it in exceptional fashion. I know he has unbelievable leaping ability and plays over the rim all the time, but his defense was very impressive this weekend as he looked unstoppable on both ends of the floor in their win over San Antonio’s Finest and Randall on Saturday! If his jumper keeps improving, and it’s not that bad to begin with, he will be unguardable and he is already on a bunch of radars as far as DII and FCS schools for recruitment.

8 JALEN BRAZIEL

FRENSHIP HIGH SCHOOL

Jalen Braziel is having a great month! His AAU team went to the Metroplex and had a great weekend in early June and Jalen consequently got picked up by the prestigious NIKE EYBL organization (JL3) to play with them on their live tournament periods this summer; something he definitely deserves considering his superior talent and play on the hardwood. He showed why he is starting to get some major looks nationwide this weekend in the Tech Camp with his lightning-fast attacks to the rim and when opponents took a step back he either made the jumper, or splashed a three. The sky is the limit for Braziel and he is a competitor that hates to lose. Sometimes we could take that as a negative from the outside looking in, but it’s not; he just wants to win. I’ll take that any day of the week as he doesn’t mind working for what he feels he deserves!

9 KALEB HARRELL

ABERNATHY HIGH SCHOOL

Kaleb is supremely gifted on the court and I have been watching him the last few months get better and better. Harrell has one thing you can’t teach and that’s size! He is very elusive and can handle the rock with ease. I think he will continue to add tools to the basketball bag while juggling football as the starting quarterback for the Abernathy Antelopes this fall. He loves basketball so don’t be surprised when all the schools start coming for him; he’s too good for them not too!

10 HAYDEN WILSON

FRENSHIP HIGH SCHOOL

Hayden is a young-and-upcoming stalwart for the Tigers of Frenship; in football and in basketball! I watched him at the 806 Rising Stars game and a couple of his Summer League games along with the Tech Camp and one thing is evident.. He’s special! Give him a year or two and he will be on the way to going major DI in whatever sport he chooses when he graduates in 2026 because I keenly remember going out to scout another player in a game Hayden’s team was playing against last season and Wilson caught three touchdown passes and had almost 200 yards receiving lol! The real deal! Stay tuned!

OTHER PLAYERS THAT STOOD OUT:

Armani Garcia- Frenship

Hayden Buckley- Shallowater

Dayne Collier- Lubbock-Cooper
