AMARILLO BLITZES TO STATE WITH IMPRESSIVE 5A REGIONAL WEEKEND

I talked about this earlier this season; Amarillo vs Lubbock-Cooper in the Regional Final to see who would go to State this season in 5A’s Region I bracket. Well, as luck would have it, the Sandies knocked the Lady Pirates out to make it to the Regional Tournament with a 62-50 victory while avenging an earlier loss to Lubbock-Cooper in the season, 62-60.

In this year’s Regional Tournament Amarillo came into the fray as the favorite and didn’t disappoint in their first game with a 73-50 win over Mansfield Timberview in the semifinal contest and then took on Lake Dallas in the Regional Final; who knocked out upstart Monterey, 65-53 behind Elliott’s 30 points and stifling defense against the Lady Plainsmen the entire contest.

In the Regional Final, Amarillo may have had their worst first quarter of the year early as they subsequently were down, 20-13 late in the second. Now, after a timeout late in the period, Amarillo played the best second and third quarters of the year while playing some unbelievable defense as well! Lake Dallas could not contain Jada Graves and her playmaking capabilities all game which led to open three-point shots for Lacey Rice; who torched from behind the arc all tournament and led the Sandies to a 23-6 third quarter that put the game away after a 45-29 lead after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter it was smooth sailing for Coach Williams’ squad as Amarillo secured a 62-45 victory to advance to the State Tournament in 5A as the best team in Region I! Congrats to Amarillo, who has a serious shot to win it all again! We will be there live for coverage, starting Thursday!
