806 WK 2 SUNDAY HUDDLE: TASCOSA DOMINANT, BROWNFIELD, FARWELL IMPRESS

Week two is in the books for 806 Football and we have seen a lot of great action in the last two weeks; from Tascosa with another impressive start, to Farwell doing great and starting 2-0 as well! Here are some thoughts that I have gathered after evaluating week two’s action.

TASCOSA HAS THAT 2018 FEELING AGAIN

The Rebels are great every year under Coach Ken Plunk, but this year’s team has that special feeling again like the 2018 squad that made it to the 6A DII State Semifinals. I remember Coach Plunk saying this could be the best team he’s ever had in the summer and I was surprised he said that, knowing all the teams I’ve seen him coach. But after watching them play and seeing just how deep they are this time around for 2022 I would’nt be surprised if the Rebels made a run all the way to Dallas for a title shot!

LISD DIDN’T HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

Lubbock Independent School District’s four teams all lost this weekend. Coronado lost 27-21 to Midland, Estacado lost 34-7 to Dumas, Lubbock High lost 56-21 to Big Spring and Monterey lost 30-0 to Abilene Wylie. Hopefully these teams will bounce back as all four have tough games this week starting Thursday when Lubbock High clashes with Levelland at home in Lowrey Field.

LUBBOCK-COOPER DOESN'T NEED TO PANIC

Lubbock-Cooper lost their annual game to Frenship, 36-33 Friday after being up a couple of scores in the fourth quarter. I think this is a good thing for the Pirates as they head to Abilene to take on Wylie this Friday. This unit is capable of making another deep run and it needed that test as their schedule will not be easy, to say the least. There aren’t too many coaches in Texas better that Chip Darden and his staff and I trust in them to make the necessary adjustments to stay on the uptick in 5A DI!

BROWNFIELD AND FARWELL SHOW PROMISE

Farwell is 2-0 early in the season and they look good! To me, winning multiple ways shows the mark of a great team. Their game against Vega on Friday was a defensive struggle and it took different ways for the Steers to pull the victory out. Corey Stancell, the All-806 preseason tailback from Farwell, made a huge interception to seal the win for his team and they have another tough test coming Friday when Sundown comes to town! Meanwhile, the Cubs, led by Coach Flores have been great so far this fall with two wins over Post and Tulia with both games being double-digit victories. Their district is winnable and they should win it!

SAME SMALL SCHOOL TEAMS LOOKING GOOD

Well, if you look at the early standings early, there are the traditional small schools dominating again! Teams like Panhandle, Stratford and Gruver are looking great again while teams like New Deal and Clarendon have started 0-2 on the season!

Let’s give a shout-out to Floydada on their big win Friday in the Floyd County Championship and Idalou, who has solid wins over Sweetwater and New Deal to start Coach Clay White’s tenure as their new Head Coach! Both of those teams are 2-0 early in the season; hopefully those teams keep it going!
