Guys, 6A and 5A had a interesting weekend and it started Thursday with maybe the game of the year from Frenship and Monterey at Lowrey Field! There also were some surprising losses as well in the slate this weekend. Let's grab a cup of coffee and go over week three in 6A and 5A 806 football.
Monterey and Frenship BOTH played exceptionally well on Thursday and it took four overtimes to decide the winner with the Tigers coming out on top with a 54-52 win. Frenship's Hudson Hutcheson had 563 yards passing and five touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown along with the two-point conversion in the 4th overtime to seal the deal for Coach Northcutt's squad.
Now, let's not forget Monterey; a team that went 0-10 last season and a lot of pundits had written them off for 2023. Fast-forward to the end of week three and Monterey is now a legit favorite to win 2-5A DI, have a 2-1 record with two quality wins over Odessa and Abilene Wylie and haven't even reached their peak yet! Also worth nothing; Jamarcus Smith had 40 carries for 310 yards and four touchdowns on the ground against Frenship for the Plainsmen attack! The beat 'em red squad is locked in for Coach Judd Thrash and we all are excited to see how the rest of the season plays out!
In other games across 5A in the 806 this weekend, Coronado lost their third game on the season with a 38-0 loss to Wichita Falls Rider and Tascosa lost to Odessa Permian, 43-6. These were two surprising outcomes as both of these teams are traditionally good teams. Caprock defeated Pampa and Palo Duro lost to the Estacado Matadors, 48-14. Amarillo also came up just a bit short in their 32-27 loss to Midland; who is a good team that will make some noise in 6A this season.
