Nationally, we have two quarterbacks that are gaining some looks in Qua Gray and Jaelyn Nolan; who has eight Division one offers and committed to Oklahoma State last month. The other four are very good and should get some DII looks, or maybe a DI offer in a rare case. Area-wide, the quarterbacks are going to be lethal and lead their teams to some productive seasons on the way to playoff berths and hopefully some deep runs in the tournament. Here are our “SUPER-SIX” quarterbacks returning to 806 competition this fall.
806 SUPER SIX QUARTERBACKS FOR 2017:
#1 JAELYN NOLAN/SR, BROWNFIELD CUBS
A special talent that can do it all on the field..anywhere on the field. His arm strength is unbelievable and he is the fastest quarterback out of the pocket in the 806, period. Nolan has verbally committed to Oklahoma State after an unofficial visit and will be a valuable asset to the Cowboys for years to come. The Cubs have the toughest schedule in the 806 for 4A teams with games against Eula, Wylie, and Bushland, which brings me to this question; will he stay healthy after missing a healthy portion of last year due to injury? Coach Smith is now in from Stinnett to take charge for the Cubs and he will have to fins some help around Jaelyn to keep him upright and the pressure off of him. The crazy thing to me is Jaelyn is just as good in basketball and baseball, too….
#2 QUA GRAY/SR, CORONADO MUSTANGS
Qua is a born leader and looks very good this season already as I have gotten to see him at two National camps in Dallas. Gray has the weapons and the mindset to play his way into a Division One scholarship for any program needing an accurate quarterback that will take the punishment in the pocket to deliver a great pass. He was 2nd team all-state last year, and may make first team this season. It’s Qua time this year..
#3 BRANDON STEWARD/SR, PAMPA HARVESTERS
4,274 yards and 45 touchdowns in 2016 ain’t bad at all for Brandon. Now, the 17 interceptions he threw last season I’m sure will come down this fall. He is on some radars already as he was invited and attended the Opening by Nike this Summer and looks to have come into his own, heading into his Senior season for Pampa. He has some weapons, including a DI Receiver in Darrel Fields coming back with him. He may have an all-state season for the Harvesters as well.
#4 BRYLON LAWSON-YOUNG/SR, MONTEREY HIGH SCHOOL
Brylon has the tools and the measurables to play his way onto someone’s roster next season if he balls out this fall. Very heady in his approach, he started the bulk of the games last year for Monterey and will be poised to handle one of the toughest districts in West Texas in 4-5A. The weapons around him and the tailback play will determine just how great Brylon will be this fall. For my money, I bet he’ll be great.
#5 COLTON MOORE/ SR, BUSHLAND HIGH SCHOOL
Bushland will be good again this fall, and that will directly have to do with Colton’s arm and pocket-awareness; which he seems to have a lot of. The Falcons made a great run in 2016 and should be ready to do damage again this season as the Falcons will come in as the favorite in 1-4A DII.
#6 BO SIMS/SR, ESTACADO HIGH SCHOOL
With some of the best coaching around from Coach Boone, Bo seems like this year will be his season to explode onto the radar of scouts and colleges. He’s talented in baseball too, so he may have a choice of what he wants to do when his athletic career is up. The Matadors have a dangerous team this season: a team that I think will go at least three rounds deep and more if Seth, Bo, Donald, Royce, Devin, and more reach their full potential. Knowing Coach Marcus Shavers, believe me when I say Estacado will be a force to be reckoned with in 2017.
#7 HONORABLE MENTION: BRYSON DAILY/SO, ABERNATHY HIGH SCHOOL
Bryson came in as a freshman and took the Antelopes to the 2A DI Semifinals. He can run good and pass good. If he becomes great in either category , the ‘Lopes may win a state title.
